Closing brief: metals finish below Thursday after the payroll rally reverses

At 3:59:40 p.m. CT, the Aurora closing-session snapshot has gold at $4,140.75, down 0.88% from the Oct. 1 stored close and 1.80% from this morning's post-payroll board. Silver is $60.37, down 1.01% from the stored close and 2.42% from morning. Gold stabilized after noon, but the 10-year Treasury yield finished the observed session at 5.275%, above Thursday's close, while the dollar index remained 0.17% lower. This is a timestamped spot snapshot, not an official settlement or finalized stored close.

What is driving it

The morning payroll rally reversed, then metals steadied after noon [1-4]

September payrolls rose 29,000, unemployment was 4.2% and wages rose 0.1% month over month. Gold is 1.80% below the 8:06:20 a.m. CT board but 0.06% above the 11:59:55 a.m. board; silver is 2.42% below morning and 0.50% above noon. Platinum is down 2.46% from morning, palladium 2.24% and rhodium 1.10%. The Aurora board is the price of record; timing does not establish one cause for every move. Compared with the prior trading day's 11:59:35 a.m. CT edition, gold is 0.52% lower and silver 0.20% lower; under this slot's temporary table-label rule those values are described here rather than placed in the prior-midday table.

Long yields recovered while the dollar stayed slightly softer [5]

At 4:00:15 p.m. CT, the 10-year Treasury yield was 5.275%, up 4.1 basis points from Thursday's close and well above the 5.157% session low. At 3:59:59 p.m. CT, the ICE dollar index was 101.924, down 0.17% on the day. Inference: the yield rebound is consistent with renewed pressure on non-yielding gold, while the softer dollar offsets part of that headwind; neither observation proves causation.

Oil futures ended mixed after a wide session [5]

November WTI futures were $91.25, down 1.74%, after trading from $88.06 to $93.51. December Brent futures were $102.76, up 0.44%, after a $98.40-$103.04 range. These are futures prices. Inference: mixed energy closes leave the inflation channel unresolved rather than confirming the morning's disinflation signal.

Factory orders did not reverse the broader afternoon setup [6]

The Census Bureau reported August manufactured-goods orders up 0.1% to $663.5 billion after a 0.8% July increase; inventories rose 0.5%. The release supplies context but does not by itself explain the metals reversal.

Shanghai remains closed, limiting fresh onshore confirmation [7]

The Shanghai Gold Exchange's official 2026 calendar says the market is closed Oct. 1-7 and resumes Oct. 8. That removes fresh SGE trading evidence from today's analysis, but does not imply a global metals shutdown or establish the direction of today's move. Reopening is outside this brief's next 72-hour calendar window.

Today's existing outlooks remain pending [3, 8]

The launch and Oct. 1 close calls, plus today's morning and noon calls and two imported legacy calls, all reached a 4:00 p.m. CT horizon today. None is scored here: finality requires horizon plus 30 minutes and a marked Aurora observation under the documented nearest-observation rule. The morning range-breach notice remains a review record, not a rewritten call or finalized score.

Outlook at publication

Original horizon: Monday, October 5, 2026, 4:00 p.m. CT — finalized stored Aurora gold spot mark, USD per troy ounce; not exchange settlement

Subjective next-session judgment: 50% from $4,080 to below $4,200, 30% below $4,080 and 20% at or above $4,200. Friday's failed payroll rally and elevated 10-year yield favor a defensive central range; a softer dollar and weekend headline risk keep both tails open. Shanghai remains closed Monday, so fresh onshore confirmation will be unavailable. These are uncalibrated desk probabilities. Scoring uses the finalized stored Aurora gold mark nearest the cutoff within +/-30 minutes; missing or unfinalized evidence remains pending.

30%
Lower

Finalized Monday stored gold mark below $4,080. Includes every lower-tail outcome without an artificial floor.

Gold < $4,080.00
50%
Range

Finalized Monday stored gold mark at least $4,080 but below $4,200. Would fit consolidation after Friday's reversal.

Gold ≥ $4,080.00 and < $4,200.00
20%
Higher

Finalized Monday stored gold mark at least $4,200. Includes every upper-tail outcome without a cap.

Gold ≥ $4,200.00

Gold levels

  • $4,080 is the lower scenario boundary; $4,000 is a further downside watch, not a floor.
  • $4,180 is the first upside watch and $4,200 the higher-bucket boundary. These are judgment-based monitoring levels, not claimed technical support or resistance.

Silver levels

  • $60 is the nearby pivot; $59 is a downside watch and $61 an upside watch.
  • Silver has no separate scored bucket. Its relative move and the AU/AG ratio are context, not additional outcome rules.

Invalidation: A finalized Monday mark below $4,080 invalidates the central range-hold case on the downside; a mark at or above $4,200 invalidates it on the upside. A material fall in long yields or renewed dollar strength would weaken the current explanation before either price boundary is reached.
